Indigenous Talent Program
The Illawarra Academy of Sport Indigenous Talent Program (ITP) provides increased and specific sporting opportunities for Indigenous athletes within the IAS catchment of Shoalhaven, Wingecarribee, Shellharbour, Kiama and Wollongong.
The program will provide talented athletes from within the IAS programs to increased level of support to enable their sporting progress. Athletes will have access to leading Aboriginal sports people from the district to assist, support and inspire them in their development. Additional support surrounding one’s culture, support mechanisms between fellow indigenous athletes, access to training opportunities and guidance on how best to progress through the sporting pathways are just some of the services offered to athletes.
The ITP provides an opportunity for the IAS to provide mentorship and a dedicated level of focus upon the outcomes and support for Indigenous athletes across the greater Shoalhaven, Illawarra and Wingecarribee region.
The IAS will be holding our Indigenous Talent ID day on Tuesday 29 August 2023.
The Talent ID Day will be the selection trial for the 2023-24 Indigenous Talent Program.

Indigenous Talent Program
Information
The IAS Indigenous Talent Program is designed to support the developmental needs of the regions young talented athletes by providing industry leading high-performance sport development programs with some additional support for indigenous athletes.
Athletes will need to be identified during the IAS Indigenous Talent ID Day to be selected into the IAS Indigenous Sports Program.
The program will provide talented athletes from within the IAS programs to increased level of support to enable their sporting progress. Athletes will have access to leading Aboriginal sports people from the district to assist, support and inspire them in their development. Additional support surrounding culture, support mechanisms between fellow indigenous athletes, access to training opportunities and guidance on how best to progress through the sporting pathways are just some of the services offered to athletes.
Scholarship Benefits
– Targeted monthly IAS ITP squad sessions focusing on sporting skills, game sense, strength & conditioning, cultural awareness, education and mentoring.
– Access to IAS strength & conditioning program (including weekly supervised gym sessions and sport specific programming).
– Sports education and personal development opportunities.
– Further sport specific pathway progression and opportunities where applicable.
– Invitation to trial for IAS sport specific programs (note: selection into the IAS ITP does NOT guarantee selection into sport specific programs or Future Stars)

Indigenous Talent Program
Athlete Eligibility
To be eligible for the Indigenous Talent Program, athletes must satisfy the following eligibility criteria;
- Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
- Be turning 13, 14, 15, 16 or 17 in 2023
- Reside within the Illawarra Region made up of the Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Wingecarribee or Wollongong local government areas
- Be endorsed by the school and/or sporting association whom you are representing.
- Be selected through the IAS Indigenous Talent ID Day on Tuesday 29 August 2023.
Selection into the IAS ITP does NOT guarantee selection into sport specific programs or Future Stars. IAS Indigenous Talent Program scholarships and sport specific program scholarships will be separate. Athletes selected into the IAS ITP will be invited to trial for the IAS sport specific programs.
