The Illawarra Academy of Sport Scholarships not only focus on athletic progress but on the holistic development of an athlete. A key component of this is our Personal Development Camps which create a setting where athletes work together to overcome obstacles, solve problems, and challenge themselves all whilst relating back to the sporting environment.

Our one-day Personal Development Camps were held at Berry Sport and Recreation Centre during February and included all our sport specific squads, AWD and LoneStar athletes. During the camps, a variety of team and individual activities were conducted that were specific to the sports and goals of the squads attending.

Each camp consisted of a ropes course, water activity and team initiative challenges, all of which challenged athletes to overcome obstacles, solve problems, set goals and build team cohesion. A highlight for many participants was taking themselves to new heights and building mental strength through overcoming fears in the high ropes challenges. Another highlight was the water activities, which consisted of either kayaking or team rafts.

The camps were a great opportunity for the squads to bond and improve their team work whilst extending their comfort zones. Not only did the squads get to know each other but it also proved beneficial for coaches to see the athletes away from the sporting field and observe how they lead their peers and react to different situations and pressure.
