Shellharbour’s talented Illawarra Academy of Sport athletes were recently recognised at the Shellharbour City Council Mayoral Reception.
The event, held at the Shellharbour Civic Centre, celebrated the outstanding achievements of the 31 Illawarra Academy of Sport scholarship athletes from the Shellharbour local government area.
Illawarra Academy of Sport athletes and their families enjoyed hearing from and meeting with Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer, IAS President Sharon Wingate, and other esteemed and valued members of the Illawarra Academy of Sport and the Shellharbour community.
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the achievements of local athletes demonstrate the value of continued investment in sport.
“Our community is incredibly proud of these young athletes and all they’ve achieved,” Mayor Homer said.
“Selection into the Academy is a significant milestone and reflects their commitment, discipline and talent.
“Council is proud to support pathways that help our young people reach their full potential, both on and off the field.”
Illawarra Academy of Sport Girls Rugby 7’s athlete Niamh Hicks delivered a vote of thanks speech on behalf of the Shellharbour athletes, outlining the positive impact that the IAS has had on her sporting journey, and thanking Shellharbour City Council for their ongoing support.
“I have been a proud IAS athlete for the past two years, and I have made so many incredible lifelong memories; from the training sessions to the education workshops, to the Academy Games, some of my best friendships have been made through the IAS,” she said.
“None of this would be possible without the help from everyone behind the scenes, to which I would like to sincerely thank Shellharbour City Council for their ongoing support. Your investment in our development as athletes provides us with valuable opportunities, not only to grow as athletes, but also as individuals.
“Thanks to the support of Shellharbour City Council, we can access programs and experiences that promote our physical, mental, and personal development, helping us build the skills and confidence needed for success both in sport and in life.”
Illawarra Academy of Sport President Sharon Wingate praised the efforts of Shellharbour City Council and thanked the organisation for its contribution towards the IAS.
“Shellharbour City Council has been a proud supporter of young athletes in this region for more than 40 years,” she said.
“I would particularly like to acknowledge Mayor Chris Homer, who has chosen to fulfil his role as a Foundation Member personally, rather than appointing a representative. That commitment speaks volumes about the focus placed on our young people, and we sincerely thank you and Shellharbour City Council for it.”
