Kiama Councillor Stuart Larkins, representing the Mayor, provided the formal welcome to the athletes on behalf of the Kiama Municipality.
“I want to say how very proud we are of you, no matter what your sporting future holds,” Councillor Larkins said.
“It is a pleasure to give the welcoming address on behalf of Kiama Council and we are so happy to celebrate the achievements of athletes and coaches within our region.”
Illawarra Academy of Sport basketball athlete Snow Harland-Wright (14) and golf athlete Sage Laird (15) delivered a vote of thanks speech on behalf of the Kiama athletes, outlining the positive impact that the IAS has had on their sporting journey, and thanking Kiama Municipal Council for their ongoing support.
“I would like to thank the Illawarra Academy of Sport for helping me on my sporting journey and giving people like Sage and I the opportunity to thrive in our respective sporting environments,” Harland-Wright said.
“I have been part of the IAS for the last two years and have found it to be two of the best years of my life. All the opportunities, friends I’ve made, and the experiences have been amazing and have left me with lasting memories.
“A big thanks to Kiama Council for giving us facilities to train and perfect our game so that we are always ready to go. I would also like to thank the IAS again for the amazing program they have put together to not only let young athletes like us develop but also give us a platform to be seen by scouts and selectors.”
Young golf star Laird, who currently has a scholarship at St Michael’s Golf Club in Sydney and is part of the junior elite squad, thanked the IAS for their contribution towards her career as she continues to develop into a professional athlete.
“My journey with the Illawarra Academy of Sport started when I was just 13 years old, and I was fortunate enough to join the Development Squad,” Laird said.
“This year, I’m proud to be the only female golfer in the Academy, and I know I have the support of the Illawarra Academy of Sport. Being part of this team for the past four years has been an amazing opportunity.
“I’ve truly appreciated all the education sessions, strength and conditioning programs, and camps. These experiences have helped me improve my golf skills and opened up pathways with Jack Newton Junior Golf.”
Illawarra Academy of Sport President Sharon Wingate praised the efforts of Kiama Municipal Council and thanked the organisation for their contribution towards the IAS.
“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Kiama Municipal Council for their continued support and dedication to the Illawarra Academy of Sport,” Wingate said.
“2025 marks a significant milestone for us – our 40th Anniversary – and as we celebrate this milestone year, we also recognise the commitment and hard work of the athletes.
“Your achievements reflect not only your talent and dedication, but also the encouragement of your families, coaches, and the broader Illawarra community.
“We wish you every success in your individual and collective pursuits and look forward to celebrating each and every milestone.”
