IAS Graduate Caleb Ewan has claimed his second overall Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic series win. Ewan dominated the series which is held over 4 stages on 4 different criterium courses that test a rider’s versatility. Ewan won the first 3 stages setting up a unique opportunity on the final stage to possibly be the first rider to win every stage. In a crazy final stage that saw 13 of the 86 riders finish the race in two small groups, Caleb sprinted to 5th place being denied the chance to make history by winning all 4 stages in succession. The 20-year-old is showing the most dominant form in the series since the great Robbie McEwen was at his peak. McEwen won a record six Bay Classics from 1997 to 2005. Caleb has made an outstanding start to his first full season as a top-level professional rider. He road in his first Cycling Australia Road National Championships and claimed 2 Silver Medals. The 2015 Mars Cycling Australia Road National Championships were held in Victoria and riders competed in the 3 road disciplines of a Criterium, Individual Time Trial and a Road Race. Caleb’s 2 Silver Medals came in the Criterium and Road Race and he did not ride in the time trial. The great start the year has created alot of hype and expectations of Caleb however ORICA-GreenEDGE Sport Director Matt White says that the team is looking at the bigger picture for their first year professional sprinter. When questioned about Caleb now taking part in the Santos Tour Down Under Matt White response was direct. “Caleb has a program that I am very confident will get him wins during the season, Yes, he is in great shape at the moment, but he has only two weeks until he races again in the Cadel Evans Classic.” “We are definitely looking big picture for Caleb with his goals for the year and his long term future which is why he will not be lining up in Adelaide.”
