Some of Kiama’s most talented young athletes were recognised at the Kiama Municipal Council Mayoral Reception.

The event, held at the picturesque Pavilion in Kiama, celebrated the outstanding achievements of the 16 Illawarra Academy of Sport scholarship athletes from the Kiama region.

Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald, Kiama Deputy Mayor Melissa Matters, Illawarra Academy of Sport President Sharon Wingate and CEO Salv Carmusciano, Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer and Kiama Council’s Director Corporate and Commercial Joe Gaudiosi were all in attendance at the event.

Councillor McDonald share a quote with the athletes in attendance from cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman, who grew up in Bowral in the Wingecarribee Shire.

“The finest of athletes have, along with skill, a few more essential qualities: to conduct their life with dignity, with integrity, with courage and modesty. All these are totally compatible with pride, ambition, determination and competitiveness.”

Councillor McDonald said Kiama Council was proud to be a long-standing supporter of the Illawarra Academy of Sport.

“For more than 40 years, our region has backed an athlete centred, community focused, fee free model that continues to shape not only exceptional competitors, but exceptional people,” Councillor McDonald said.

“The Academy equips young athletes with skills that reach far beyond sport – psychology, nutrition, goal setting, public speaking and media awareness. These are the tools that help young people step confidently into the world, whether they continue in sport or choose a different path.

“The IAS does more than develop talent. It builds capability, character and opportunity.

“Congratulations to every athlete, every family member, every coach and volunteer, and to the IAS for continuing to strengthen and inspire our region.”

Illawarra Academy of Sport basketball athlete Eleanor Taylor delivered a vote of thanks speech on behalf of the Kiama athletes outlining the positive impact that the IAS has had on her sporting journey and thanking Kiama Council for their ongoing support.

“Two years ago, I started with the Illawarra Academy of Sport basketball program. It was a privilege to be selected then, as it is again this year. I am excited to go to every training session, as it is both challenging and fun,” Taylor said.

“The education sessions about strength and conditioning, nutrition, media training, and female health, have all helped me to grow as a person and an athlete.

“The IAS program, with its wide range of sports, and diversity of educational content, provides a complete package for young and future athletes like me.

“None of this would be possible for any of us without the support of Kiama Council. So, on behalf of the athletes, I would like to say thank you to Kiama Council.”

Illawarra Academy of Sport President Sharon Wingate praised the efforts of Kiama Council and thanked the organisation for their contribution towards the IAS.

“Thank you Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald and Kiama Council for your continued support of young athletes in this region,” she said.

“Our program only exists because of long-standing partnerships with Councils, the endorsement of the Office of Sport, and the advocacy of State and Federal MPs.

“That continued confidence in our model — where the athlete is at the centre of everything we do — allows us to maintain what matters most: and that is ensuring talented athletes can access high-performance development regardless of circumstance.

“To our athletes — congratulations. We’re proud to recognise you today and even more excited to see what comes next.

“Enjoy this moment, keep working hard, stay connected to your community, and make the most of your time with us.”
