This weekend, thousands of volunteers across Australia assisted The Salvation Army in their major fundraiser of the year, The Red Shield Appeal. For the eighth year in a row, a group of enthusiastic Illawarra Academy of Sport athletes assisted this worthy cause by collecting donations at Wollongong Woolworths.
The Illawarra Academy of Sport prides itself on developing athletes holistically and producing young ambassadors for the Illawarra community. The local community generously supports the IAS athletes and programs, and in turn part of the requirements of an IAS athlete is to give back to the community through volunteering and supporting community-based events or services such as the Red Shield Appeal.
“The Red Shield Appeal is an excellent opportunity for the IAS athletes to give back to the community and assist in raising much-needed funds to assist the Salvation Army in providing social welfare and community service programs,” IAS CEO, John Armstrong said.
The Red Shield Appeal runs from April to June each year with the main collection weekend for being the 29-30 May 2021. The money donated is used heavily to provide beds to the homeless, emergency and disaster relief, disability programs, family welfare relief and refuge for women and children in crisis.
“We are so grateful to the Illawarra Academy of Sport for once again assisting us at our Community Collection Spot at Woolworths Wollongong,” Karen Walker, The Salvation Army Illawarra & South Coast Community Fundraising & Public Relations Coordinator said.
